Top-Tier Monster Characters in Visual Novels

With Halloween coming up, we’re taking a look at some noteworthy monster characters that we’ve met in visual novels.

With Halloween coming up, we thought it was a good idea to take a look at some of the most noteworthy monster characters that we’ve run into in visual novels. Not just any grotesque and frightening creature constitutes a top-tier monster, however. We’re taking a look at some of the most interesting and unique supernatural beings that have left a lasting impression. Be sure to let us know about your favorite monster characters in the comment section below!

Calculester from Monster Prom

Calculester Hewlett-Packard isn’t your average monster. He’s a sentient computer that the player is able to free in a secret ending of the first Monster Prom game. He later shows up in the DLC Monster Prom: The Second Term as a main romanceable option. Calculester spends the majority of your time with him trying to decipher human emotions, and usually failing. Even when things get heated and you think you’re about to lean in for a kiss, the robot will say or do something taken almost too literally. But that’s alright, because it’s usually cute, and we’re willing to forgive him! Calculester is a wholesome cinnamon roll—the complete opposite of the monster stereotype, and honestly… we love him for that!

Monster Prom is available on Steam, GOG, PS4, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch!

Raze from Demonheart

Raze is a tantalizing demon from the game Demonheart by Rolling Crown. What sets him apart from other demons is not his luxurious black locks or his red skin. Raze is full of mystery and allure. He’s a character that stays with Bright throughout her journey and offers her advice (though whether she chooses to trust him is up to the player). He makes this list because he’s a character that isn’t truly transparent. You’ll need to play through the full game, and maybe even multiple endings, to get the full gist of who this demon really is, and if his motivations are truly noble or something else entirely.

Demonheart is available on Steam and itch.io.

Skelly from Misty Hollow

How often have you had the chance to go out on a date with a skeleton, and a cute one at that? Skelly from Misty Hollow, developed by Cozii Studios, is a skeleton girl that you meet once you move into a new town. While you’ll meet a whole cast of monsters, Skelly sticks out because of her soft demeanor and vibrant personality. She’s quick to make friends with you but is also a bit hesitant with diving in too quickly and assuming you’ll want to reciprocate. Even the best of us get shy, which makes Skelly’s character all the more relatable. There’s just something about her cute design and bashful personality that makes her all the more eye-catching.

Misty Hollow is available on itch.io.

Milo Belladonna from Monster Camp

Milo is a nonbinary grim reaper that makes their debut appearance in the latest installment of the Monster Prom series, Monster Camp. Milo makes it onto this list because of their unforgettable personality. This reaper is extremely dedicated to their job and will make sure that they cross souls over who have run out of time. But even more than that, Milo is dedicated wholeheartedly to their social media persona. So much so that it can and probably will get in the way of your dates. Even when spending intimate moments with Milo, you’ll feel like they’re stealing the show. I’m perfectly okay with that, because Milo is an absolute riot to be around!

Monster Prom 2: Monster Camp is available on Steam, GOG, and Nintendo Switch!
