Visual Novels That Feature Nonbinary Characters

Happy Pride Month, everyone! Continuing on with our LGBTQIA+ posts for the month of June, today I’m focusing on visual novels that feature nonbinary and agender characters.

Happy Pride month, everyone! Continuing on our trend of featuring games with LGBTQIA+ content, today we’re focusing on visual novels that feature nonbinary characters. A nonbinary person is someone who doesn’t identify as strictly male or female. They can dress or appear however they want: “femme”, “masc”, or androgynous. How a person presents doesn’t disqualify them of their identity.

Now that we’ve explained what the definition of nonbinary is, let’s get into today’s games.

A Foretold Affair

Price: $12.99

Available Platforms: Windows, Mac (itch.io) (Steam)

A Foretold Affair allows the player to choose the pronouns for the main character from she/her, he/him, and they/them. The game also features an agender character named Kea, who is the absolute sweetest and my favorite romance interest in the game!

In the game, you play as Buffalo Seer, a magic user who is known as an Abnormal for their magical abilities. The power that Buffalo Seer possess is future seeing, which allows them to look into the future. Despite being advised against to using their power, Buffalo Seer looks into their future, only to see that they will have left the Abnormal society and gotten married to someone they’ve never met before.

With their future in mind, Buffalo Seer decides to leave everything they once knew behind in pursuit of making their future come true. This is where you meet the game’s three romance interests, all of whom are caught off-guard by Buffalo’s Seer forwardness about their future together. It’s your job to make sure that Buffalo Seer’s future comes true while also trying not to scare off your future spouse!

Hustle Cat

Price: $19.99

Available Platforms: Windows, Mac (itch.io) (Steam)

In Hustle Cat, the player is able to choose their pronouns: she/her, he/him, or they/them.

I previously mentioned Hustle Cat earlier this year on my Top 10 Visual Novels to Play on Valentine’s Day article. So, if you’ve read that one, I’ll try to avoid repeating myself.

In Hustle Cat, you play Avery Grey, who gets a job at a cat cafe named A Cat’s Paw. Everything about the place is great, from the coffee to the wonderful staff, and the fact that there are cats you can pet! As Avery continues on with their new job, they come across a mysterious book filled with text in a language they can’t recognize. They give up on reading the book. After a long day of work, they attempt to leave the cafe when they find out that all the cats in the place are actually their fellow employees. It turns out that everyone who works at A Cat’s Paw is cursed: they turn into cats once they step outside of the place. So, it’s Avery’s job to try and find a way to break the curse. Along the way, maybe they’ll find themselves falling for one of their co-workers? Who knows!

Later Daters

Price: $7.99 (Part 1), $15.99 (Part 1 & Part 2)

Available Platforms: Windows, Mac, Nintendo Switch (itch.io) (Steam) (eShop)

In Later Daters, you have the option to choose your pronouns between she/her, he/him, and they/them.

You play as the newest resident at Ye OLDE retirement community. There, you meet a fun cast of seniors who prove that age is really just a number, because despite being older, they know how to have fun! Later Daters shows that just because you’re older doesn’t mean there’s no time for love. While the game does talk about mortality, it doesn’t dwell on it enough to put a damper on the upbeat mood the game has.

At first, you may be put off by the idea of dating seniors, like I was. It’s not something I’m used to in romances. But everyone in this game is full of life and all of them have such great personalities that you can’t help but be charmed by them.

If you’re looking to have a good ol’ time, then I highly recommend you check out Later Daters.

//TODO: today

Price: Free

Available Platforms: Windows, Mac, Linux (itch.io) (Steam)

Like the other games on this list, you’re able to select from pronoun options for the protagonist: she/her, he/him, and they/them.

In //TODO: today, you play as Teal, a recent college dropout who is also an aspiring artist. All Teal wants to do is live a happy life without any major issues. However, when they’re faced with the prospect of not being able to pay rent for the month, they meet an AI, whose gender is also left up to the player. This AI claims that they can tend to Teal’s every need.

While this is going on, Teal’s co-worker is a constant reminder of who our protagonist strives to be, but life keeps getting in the way.

Will Teal be able to figure life out and pay rent at the end of the month? That’s for you to decide!
